About Us
CPRE, The Countryside Charity, works for a beautiful, accessible English countryside that is rich in nature and plays a crucial role in responding to climate change. With a local CPRE group in every county supported by a national charity, we advocate the kind of countryside we all aspire to: one with sustainable, healthy communities and available to people to enjoy. We particularly support protection and enhancement of the landscape, rural heritage, tranquillity and the avoidance of light and other forms of pollution. We urge the re-use of previously-developed ('brownfield') land to be prioritised before building on open countryside but recognise the need for affordable social housing in rural areas. We support sustainable farming and the contribution it can make to the countryside. CPRE has worked for almost a century to support and promote the countryside by engaging with the planning system, Government agencies, other NGOs and local communities.
